Hold the swab right underneath the end you are breaking off with the line on it, and then pinch the top of the end and bend it to the side.

I hold the swap vertically, making sure the end with the blue line is pointing towards the ceiling. Then, I use my pointer and my thumb to bend it towards me until I feel a small snap. If you still end up breaking of that end of the swab, it still works if you hold it the way I was talking about.
