Personally, & this is just my opinion (I'm 26, I have a daughter of my own, & I wear very dark eye make-up myself) I wouldn't choose the Rocker eye for such a young girl. It's rather flashy & over-the-top for a grown woman, much less a girl going into the 8th grade, very evening make-up, think going out on a night on the town or to a rock concert. Instead I would go with the Eyelining Tutorial, or Intro To Eyes Tutorial. These both come with some wonderful brushes & eyeshadows. Or if she really likes heavier looking eye make-up (god knows I do) then get her the Smokey Eye or Smokey V Eye tutorials. The Spotlight on Primetime kit is a good one even. But hey, I forget kids are more advanced nowadays, so if you want, get her the Rocker eye kit for fun, & another kit for daytime looks. You'll be considered one awesome Mama! =]

I would say that is fine for any age. I think it entirely depends on how heavy you apply it. It can be really pretty when done VERY light handed. I have used the colors separate and together as the kit shows during daytime for work but i used a very light hand & went sparingly with the colors. I mean VERY light handed, like a couple specks in the lid, swirl, swirl, swirl, TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP then apply. It starts off slow but after 2 or 3 times its just right for a light look.
I have also done it very heavy handed at night when I go out (as shown in the picture on the box) & you would NEVER guess it was the same kit.
Thats the great thing about these colors, You can really achieve a great range of looks if you take the time to apply it.
