This brush is slightly less than 4 inches long. The bristles are approx 1 1/2 inches long. It is 4 in whether retracted or not. The retraction is the silver part just below the bristles, you pull it up to cover the bristles then apply the cap and it slides the silver part back into place with the bristles tucked safely inside the cap. Hope this makes sense! It's a really cool brush!

Yes, extremely well. Better than the flat edged brush really. I usually don't tap on its side, but rather tap it with bristles pointing up, kind of spreads the powder into the brush instead of all over my counter :)
